Set Back

Everything was going great. I could finally see an end in sight. My hair was growing back into an awkward, yet longer stage and beginning to cover atleast one of my scars. My insicion on my chest was beginning to finally heal and my hand was beginning to open. I was the happiest girl in the world knowing I could open my hand after having it closed for 3 years. It felt like a miracle.
I should of known this was too good to be true. Last weekend, I bumped my head on the hood over the stove after trying to plug my phone into the wall right next to it. Who knows how I did it but all last week the incision began getting ugly. Yesterday I decided to ask Jenn to take a look since she's an RN, I knew she could help me out. She squeezed it and said she really didn't like the looks of it and I should call the doctor. After calling my neurosurgeon, I found myself driving back to the hospital so they could take a look.
My mom, Hailey and I walked into the ER, thinking we would be heading home in just a short time with an antibiotic. Boy, there are some strange people out there. One guy came in on a stretcher that must have been drinking heavily all night. He started cursing at all the doctors and I will admit, I was a bit afraid of him. Especially since the world was supposed to end at 6pm and this was at 5:30. When they finally called me back, there were so many patients that I ended up in a bed in the hall. We sat there and watched everyone walk by with all these serious injuries and I felt just fine. I ended up feeding Hailey and rocking her to sleep while sitting there. My mom and I noticed a very sick man in the room down the hall and the door was wide open so we saw everything that happened. His foot was dripping in blood and there was a big metal rod sticking through his knee. We saw the doctors cut the end of the rod off with big clippers that looked like brush cutters. It was so scary and made me a little nauseous. We saw someone with bells palsy, someone with a sprained ankle and a young girl throwing up. Everything seemed worse then my situation because I felt completely fine.
After sitting there for what seemed like hours, a resident came over and looked at my incision. She said it didn't look bad but the neurosurgeon would have to take a look. Soon after, one of the surgeons who works with Dr. Pilitsis came over and looked. They brought me into a trauma room to wash it and do a culture to see if there was an infection. After doing that, they agreed that I just had to go home with an antibiotic.
A couple minutes later, an emergency room doctor came over and squeezed the incision and saw some puss, so he immediately brought the neurosurgeon back over to look. They called Dr. Pilitsis and said they had to admit me to give me IV antiobiotics. I felt like I was in a nightmare and I just wanted it to be over. I was so happy about my hand opening and now this was happening!! Why me??!
About a half hour later, one of the anesthesiologists came over to talk to me about surgery. My jaw dropped as I stared at him in confusion. I didn't know what he was talking about. They decided they had to cut my head back open and clean it out to make sure everything was clean underneath. They explained to me that if it was a really bad infection they would have to take the device out and replace it later on. I was so upset.
This morning, they did this procedure and said it was just mild. I have to stay in the hospital until Tuesday or Wednesday though until they get the cultures back to make sure I am taking the right antibiotics for the infection. I will be going home with a picc line to have IV antibiotics for 6 weeks. So much for healing fast, going on vacation with my parents and going back to Florida in June. This positive attitude I had is slowly going down the tubes. :(
I just want to hold my Hailey.

When Pineapple socks aren’t enough

I wake up in the morning, get my kids ready for school, make my husband and I a cup of coffee and take three small pills. When you look at them you’d never imagine what they could do to your body but right from the beginning I was willing to do it. No matter what it took, I would do it. Little did I know, these pills would just be another part of the sadness. I continue on my day, limiting caffeine, watching what I eat and gaining a pound a minute. Before bed, Jim injects more medication into my buttocks. These medications are supposed to be getting my body ready to have a baby but for some reason this small thing that I want so badly is so hard to achieve. Since the day I met Jim, we’ve wanted a baby. We’ve picked out names, first outfits, and ways we want to tell our parents the news. It’s been 4 years since we agreed we wanted to start trying and we still don’t have it. Just before Covid hit, we decided to see a fertility specialist to help us achieve pregnancy. We tracked my cyc...

update on Dystonia and Family

I have been doing as well as could be expected.  I am back in Florida so it's nice to be with Ryan.  Although I am still upset about the whole thing, I am trying hard to smile and not let it show.  The spasms have returned and have gotten worse since the DBS was removed.  When I suck on a piece of candy or ice, my throat tightens up.  It's very scary but Im hoping it won't get any worse.  My neck also twitches sometimes and my foot spasms have come back.  My hand is curled in but if I think about it, I can straighten my wrist (not my fingers).  The most upsetting part is that I was just looking at pictures of myself the day after DBS and I had a huge smile on my face because I had made it through and then a couple weeks later there was a picture of my hand open.  I had never been so excited as I was that day.  I had so much in my head that I wanted to do now that I could use my hand and most of it involved Hailey.  Hailey helped me ...

Pregnant With Dystonia

Well, hello there and welcome to my blog. These last couple months have been stressful, exciting, painful, happy and scary. I'm working on keeping these feelings positive! A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with Dystonia. My left hand has curled into a fist and I can no longer use my fingers. My wrist is permanantly stuck in a spasm and I now wear a brace 24/7. I get daily spasms in my feet and sometimes its hard to walk because I don't know when it is going to happen. I have muscle spasms in my back quite often and occassionally in my neck and jaw. On top of the dystonia, I have multi-directional instability in both of my shoulders, causing them to dislocate very frequently. In February, 2010 I took a home pregnancy test and it was positive! It was the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. Although my boyfriend and I were a little nervous, we smiled and started to plan our life together with our baby that was on the way. Since then, I haven't been able ...
