update

For some reason I thought these nine months were going to be great.  I thought I was going to have little to no symptoms and everything would be perfect.  At the beginning of the pregnancy I felt pretty good and the only real problem I had was my back but I thought it was because of the pregnancy itself more then the dystonia.  Im starting to think otherwise.
My back hurts so bad I can barely step on my left leg.  My left foot has been curling in and today my back is pulling in making it difficult to do anything.  I have two birthday's to shop for and grocery shopping to do and I just cant seem to get to the store because I am in so much pain.  I dont know if I should see my neurologist, my ob, walk or just lay on a heating pad.  I thought walking was good but Hailey doesnt sit in the stroller so walking and carrying a 22 month old probably isnt great for the pain.  So, any way if anyone out there has any suggestions for me that'd be great!  Lets hope and pray the pregnancy gets easier instead of harder! :)
Here's to baby #2, its all worth it!!

  1. Mandi, do what is best for you. don't worry about the shopping....ask hubby-to-be to do that...or maybe the grocery store can deliver. I dont know if this will help you, but with my third baby, I meditated a lot. I focused on breathing and visualization. In the end it helped me tremendously.

  3. Hey Mandi - it's been a while. I know we've discussed this but does your neurologist allow you to take any medications during pregnancy? Are there any safe ones? Does botox help you? I know of a woman who has dystonia, stopped her meds but continues Botox and has had successful pregnancies. I truly hope you feel better.

You know, I'm not heartbroken about not being able to go off of my meds -- i've never had a desire to bear children. But I know my husband wants to had kids so I wish I could make that happen. Problem is, even with DBS, botox and oral meds, the left side of my nexk gets so tight I sometimes cannot even swallow. It's very scary. I always have nightmares about going on vacation and forgetting my baclofen or klonopin. I always fear when i get a script for a new fill the pharmacy will call and tell me they are out.

Oh, one other question, can you have ultrasounds with your pacemaker(s)? I was told I could not. So much contradicting information out there... and no one is on the same page.

    Anyway, feel better!

  4. Hey! Im sorry it took so long to respond. I have not had botox since being pregnant, it neveer really helped my hands so I never really considered it for anything else, but maybe next time I see my doctor I will mention it to him. I wasnt on too many meds before getting pregnant but its hard not being able to take something if I do get "stuck" or cant sleep at night.

I have had 2 ultrasounds and have not had any problems with my batteries. Everything seems to be ok. I have a lot of pain and some problems some days with my neck, feet and hands but most days I am pretty good.

I hope you are doing well and hope to talk soon!!

When Pineapple socks aren’t enough

I wake up in the morning, get my kids ready for school, make my husband and I a cup of coffee and take three small pills. When you look at them you’d never imagine what they could do to your body but right from the beginning I was willing to do it. No matter what it took, I would do it. Little did I know, these pills would just be another part of the sadness. I continue on my day, limiting caffeine, watching what I eat and gaining a pound a minute. Before bed, Jim injects more medication into my buttocks. These medications are supposed to be getting my body ready to have a baby but for some reason this small thing that I want so badly is so hard to achieve. Since the day I met Jim, we’ve wanted a baby. We’ve picked out names, first outfits, and ways we want to tell our parents the news. It’s been 4 years since we agreed we wanted to start trying and we still don’t have it. Just before Covid hit, we decided to see a fertility specialist to help us achieve pregnancy. We tracked my cyc

update on Dystonia and Family

I have been doing as well as could be expected.  I am back in Florida so it's nice to be with Ryan.  Although I am still upset about the whole thing, I am trying hard to smile and not let it show.  The spasms have returned and have gotten worse since the DBS was removed.  When I suck on a piece of candy or ice, my throat tightens up.  It's very scary but Im hoping it won't get any worse.  My neck also twitches sometimes and my foot spasms have come back.  My hand is curled in but if I think about it, I can straighten my wrist (not my fingers).  The most upsetting part is that I was just looking at pictures of myself the day after DBS and I had a huge smile on my face because I had made it through and then a couple weeks later there was a picture of my hand open.  I had never been so excited as I was that day.  I had so much in my head that I wanted to do now that I could use my hand and most of it involved Hailey.  Hailey helped me get through the surgery and I was getting

Pregnant With Dystonia

Well, hello there and welcome to my blog. These last couple months have been stressful, exciting, painful, happy and scary. I'm working on keeping these feelings positive! A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with Dystonia. My left hand has curled into a fist and I can no longer use my fingers. My wrist is permanantly stuck in a spasm and I now wear a brace 24/7. I get daily spasms in my feet and sometimes its hard to walk because I don't know when it is going to happen. I have muscle spasms in my back quite often and occassionally in my neck and jaw. On top of the dystonia, I have multi-directional instability in both of my shoulders, causing them to dislocate very frequently. In February, 2010 I took a home pregnancy test and it was positive! It was the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. Although my boyfriend and I were a little nervous, we smiled and started to plan our life together with our baby that was on the way. Since then, I haven't been able
